We Are All The Same: An Interview with Becky Scarborough about Auburn University's Diversity Conference

Becky Scarborough, a retired elementary school teacher, was in attendance at Auburn University’s “Understanding Differences that Matter: Diversity Research at Auburn University” conference.

Ms. Scarborough came to the conference to support her former colleague Dr. Marilyn Strutchens, an award winner at the conference.

When asked about her feelings toward the conference, Ms. Scarborough replied, “I think it is a wonderful thing what Auburn University has started and I am proud to be associated with it.”

Ms. Scarborough emphasized the importance of students understanding what diversity is all about. She said, “The most important thing and what makes the United States a neat place, is the fact that we are a melting pot. It is not made of any one nationality. We are here because of every nationality.”

She went on to add that just because we are raised differently and have different beliefs and values, we are all the same because we are all part of the human race.

Ms. Scarborough also talked about how she explained colors in her classroom. In her first grade classes, she used to have her students stick out their hands in order to show color. After comparing colors, the class would have a discussion about diversity. The longer the exercise went on, the more her students realized that they too were all the same and only differed in their skin color.
