Rolling Toomers Corner is Auburn’s most well-known and longest standing tradition. Running to the Toomer’s Oaks after a win is something Auburn fans look forward to every Saturday.
Sadly, this could be the last football season the iconic Oak trees are still standing after Harvey Updyke Jr. allegedly poisoned them after the Iron Bowl last fall.
Auburn fans are still allowed to roll the trees after a win, but the process of cleaning up the corner on Sunday has changed. Instead of using powerful water hoses to spray down the toilet paper, clean-up crews have to pick it out by hand in order not to damage the trees any further.
That’s how Kenny Smith and his wife, Dr. Lauren Smith, came up with the idea “Unrolling Toomers,” a fan-based volunteer effort to help clean up toilet paper from Toomer’s Corner and the surrounding area.
“The concept here is about taking celebration one step farther… it seems only reasonable that we celebrate our affection for the place, this community and the university on Sundays as well,” said Kenny.
“Unrolling Toomers” starts early Sunday mornings after a victory and can last well into the late afternoon. Fans are welcome to come and go as they please.
If you participate, bring rakes and garbage bags to help pick the toilet paper off the ground. The paper up high is left for the professionals on cherry pickers
“The people that the university hires to come clean the trees are so grateful for the help and we really feel like we should be grateful for what they do,” said Kenny.
The tradition began informally and by word of mouth. It has started out small, but the Smith’s are hoping it will get bigger and bigger each week.
“We feel like if you can clean a trash-bag full a person you’ve done a really good job for they day and have done a great service to the university and to the area as well,” said Kenny.
The Smith’s have high hopes that one day this event may actually become just as big and popular as rolling the trees itself.
“Wouldn’t it be great one day if it becomes something like its own pep rally and there was music and a band and everything else,” said Kenny.
If Auburn clenches a win Oct. 1 at the next game against the South Carolina, grab a friend and come help “Unroll Toomers” the next morning!
