The Red Cross: a helping hand in Lee County

The Red Cross is an organization that has been helping with emergencies since 1881. The Lee County Red Cross is the local branch here in Auburn and was established in 1917. The Lee County Red Cross actually just celebrated their 90th birthday this past year!

Lee County Red Cross has many projects going on. They are currently raising
$100 million dollars for the National Disaster Relief Fund as part of the Red Alert Campaign.

They also have several blood drives going on. Every first Sunday of the month, Lee County Red Cross holds a blood drive at Pepperell United Methodist Church from 12-5 pm.

Lee County Red Cross is also part of the blood drives at Auburn that occur about five times a year. They recently held a blood drive at the Auburn Student Union, which is where I met Ivy Pittman.

Pittman is the Account Manager for the Lee County Chapter of the Red Cross. Pittman was been with the Red Cross for two years. Pittman is in charge of getting citizens to donate blood in nine different counties, Lee County being one of them.

Pittman wanted to work with the Red Cross because her son received blood when he was born five years ago. Since her son survived because of the blood received from donors, Pittman wanted to encourage others to receive blood and have a job that could give back.

“We are always in need of blood,” says Pittman. “Since students are the number one donors for Lee County, our need is heighten during the summer and winter when the students are away from school.”

Among the many things Lee County Red Cross participates in, one is Project SHARE, or Service to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy. The program is dedicated to helping qualified, low-income elderly, or disabled individuals facing financial and/or medical situations meet energy needs. Project SHARE works jointly with the Red Cross, Alabama Power Company and the Alabama Gas Corporation.

The Red Cross does many wonderful things for Lee County, so next time you see a blood drive, stop in and donate!
