You may have heard of the new band in town. They aren't just your plain ole' cover band. The band's contagiously fun personality is obvious and they aren't afraid to show it.
Spencer Daniel's musical talents didn't just start in college.
A Huntsville native, he began playing music in high school with friends he played baseball with. They formed a band called Moose and participated in a local Battle of the Bands.
"Whenever we won Battle of the Bands it was what really triggered my passion for music," Daniel said.
The band tries to play whenever they find the extra time. "It's tough since all of us live in different cities now but we do put on a few shows here and there," Daniel said.
Moose has played at various venues in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
Daniel's musical career followed him well into college. Daniel, Troy Braswell and David Chenault, all fraternity brothers, came together and formed a small band just for fun.
"We realized we were actually pretty good and wanted to expand and start playing full time," Daniel said.
They began searching for a drummer and keyboard player, soon to find that two mutual friends were the perfect candidates.
The band was created about a month ago and consists of five members: Spencer Daniel, guitar and lead vocals; Troy Braswell, lead guitar; John English Babinton, drums; Casey Chilson, keyboard; and David Chenault, bass guitar.
One problem. What would they be called?
It wasn't until two days before their first show that they came up with a name.
And it wasn't just any name.
The band wanted to be named after something like Perpetual Groove but decided something along those lines sounded too serious.
"We were all trying to come up with ideas and for some reason the movie "Home Alone 2" was brought up. The next thing we knew we came up with Marv and the Stikky Bandits," Daniel said. "We wanted it to be comical and not anything too serious."
Their first show was in August at Bourbon Street Bar. Daniel told the owner their creative band name and when the band showed up that night to perform, Marv and the Stikky Bandits was on the marquee outside the bar. "So from then on, we were officially Marv and the Stikky Bandits," he said.
Marv and the Stikky Bandits plays a variety of classic and modern rock cover songs. Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey's McGee, Eric Clapton and The Beatles are a few artists they pull songs from.
The band hopes to expand to other cities than just Auburn. Mississippi State and University of Alabama have shown interest in the band.
On Sept. 28, Marv and the Stikky Bandits will be performing at Bourbon Street Bar around 11 p.m.
"We really love what we do and more importantly have a blast doing it," Daniel said.
