On Nov. 6, the Auburn University National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) will host its annual homecoming step show at the Auburn University Student Activities Center beginning at 6 p.m.
For years, the homecoming step show has been a tradition for NPHC and Auburn University.
“This year we have Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta participating in the show,” said Christopher Jones, graduate advisor of NPHC.
Members of NPHC are currently selling tickets on the second floor of the Auburn University Student Center and on the concourse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased from members of NPHC at anytime. Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show.
Antonio Fortson, a senior in marketing and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, is preparing for his first step show as a member of NPHC.
“Honestly, it really hasn’t hit me yet. I guess on the actual day emotions will start to show,” Fortson said. “I know that my organization, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., has been working hard to prepare and develop a unique theme and style of stepping for this big event. I know we are ready and the crowd will enjoy it.”
Fortson is also excited for the display of Greek unity among the many organizations.
“I believe the step show highlights one of the many events that unify the National Pan-Hellenic Council,” he said. “Stepping for many organizations is a way to express themselves and be creative. This annual homecoming step show demonstrates to the Auburn community and others as to how strong of a bond the historic divine nine actually have.”
Last year’s winners included Omega Psi Phi for the fraternities and Delta Sigma Theta for the sororities. Delta Sigma Theta with not be participating in the show this year.
“I hope this year’s show is a success,” said Amber Blair, member of Delta Sigma Theta. “Even the Kappa Upsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will be unable to compete for victory again this year; Delta Sigma Theta will be represented in the show nonetheless.”
The homecoming step show is one of the premier events for NPHC and one of the largest revenue creating events for the organization.
“This is the event that brings in the most money for NPHC, since we are self funded, and don’t receive other funds, it is very important that we do well on this show,” said Jones.
Although NPHC hosts several events for the community, it primarily serves a campus purpose.
“NPHC is the governing body for the nine historically black Greek letter organizations here on Auburn’s campus,” said Jones.
