Not very many students at Auburn University have heard of Studio 5, except for art related majors. The students of Studio 5 want to spread the word about this small but exciting club. The club is open to all majors and has no requirements for membership, other than an interest in art.
The club provides opportunities to learn about and expand one’s knowledge of art.
“We provide opportunities for club members to go together to various lectures and exhibitions,” said Jesse Burleson, president of Studio 5.
Many of these lectures and exhibitions take place here in Auburn but also in surrounding areas. For example, on September 20, the club is giving members the opportunity to attend a lecture on “Fighting for Freedom” at 5 p.m. at the Jules Collins Smith Museum.
Other activities include providing members with help working on resumes and finding future careers mostly in the curatorial field. Also, leaders from the club hold study sessions before exams for survey and art history classes. The next study session to be held will be on September 25 and it will cover material from the Ancient West exam one.
The group currently has 30-40 members and is looking to gain more members. According to Burleson, most of the members of Studio 5 are majoring in something pertaining to fine art, but there are also some members that are in non-fine art related majors.
“I would describe Studio 5 as a common interest group,” said Burleson.
Maggie Croushore was recently elected vice president of Studio 5.
“My job is basically to plan everything,” said Croushore.
Recently Croushore helped plan and host a contemporary photography exhibition at the Biggin Gallery. This exhibition was open to the public. There will more exhibitions like this coming up this year.
She also introduces artists that come to speak at the Jules Collins Smith Museum and Biggin Gallery. On September 19 she will introduce Alison Ouellette-Kirby at Biggin Gallery at 5 p.m. Ouelette-Kirby’s presentation will be Things Unsaid.
If you are a student at Auburn University and are interested in joining Studio 5, email Jesse Burleson at jtb0012@auburn.edu or Maggie Croushore at mac0021@auburn.edu. The next meeting will be on October 3 at 5 p.m. in Biggin Hall. This meeting will discuss the process of getting an internship in the art world.
