Tornados, sunshine and snow. It’s springtime in Auburn. Spring break, March break, study week, reading week. Whatever you want to call it, in a week and a half Auburn students will have a 10-day holiday from school.

Today, spring break is typically thought of as a week of binge-drinking and sunbathing. However, not only did it have innocent beginnings, but Auburn students have proven that it is no longer just a week of partying.

In 1936, the swim team of Colgate University started what would be the beginnings of what we know today as spring break. The coach brought the team to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to practice swimming in the first Olympic-size swimming pool.

He kept bringing the team down, and not long after, coaches from all over the country were bringing their teams to the pool.

A bar opened near the hotel and spring break, as we know it, began.

Starting in 1960, movies started displaying Spring Break as a wild and crazy week off from school. Hot spring break destinations sprang up all over from Panama City Beach, Fla., Palm Springs, Calif., Tijuana and Cancun, Mexico and many others.

However, for some Auburn students, this “typical” spring break is just not for them. Next week, students will be traveling all other the country and some across the world.

Senior Danielle Leclair is interning this semester in Richmond, Va. Leclair plans on using the week for rest and relaxation.

“This year for spring break, a couple of my friends and I will be going to Jackson Hole, Wyo.,” Leclair said. “We really just plan on taking it easy, skiing and doing lots of outdoorsy things.”

Freshman Meredith Hastings is going to use a week off of school to give her time and talent to good use.

"I am going to Chicago for a mission trip," Hastings said. "I think it's important to volunteer with things like this because since I've been in college I haven't had the opportunity to really give something back to the community."

Senior Taylor Voelker is taking full advantage of the week with a group of her friends.

“For spring break this year, I am going to Key West, Fla.," Voelker said. "A group of my best friends and I are all going. I'm really excited because it's our last spring break together, so it'll be great to just hang out all together for a solid week!"

Allison Best, a senior majoring in graphic design, is going to use the break as a week of playing catch-up.

“My spring break plans are to go home, to North Carolina, and hang out with my boyfriend and some of my friends," Best said. "We might go to Charleston because it's my birthday. Then I'm going to do lots of homework."

Harrison Bain, a building science major, is travelling across the globe for a destination wedding.

“This year for spring break, I will be going to Tahiti for my brother's destination wedding," Bain said. "It's definitely out of the ordinary, but it should be a good time."

Senior Tori Cameron plans on using the break to go back home and look for a job.

“Since I don’t exactly have a job yet, I’m going to use the opportunity to go back to Houston and interview with some companies,” Cameron said. “Hopefully not doing anything fun that week will pay off!”
