From cell phones to web pages and Utterli
, the social world we live in will never be the same.
As the social media movement continues to advance, who does it leave in its wake and how can they stay abreast of this ever-changing social world?
According to Kris Street, Coordinator of Events and Recruitment for Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, “Social media seems to bypassing the thirties to forties age group. We are left behind without the current technological knowledge to operate and function on many of these sites.”
I sympathize completely.
With media such as iChat
, showing up almost over night, the concept of social media can be overwhelming. Although it seems too vast and complicated, this movement is here to stay and we should all embrace it.
After utilizing social media, you may find that sending a simple text message or e-mail will no longer suffice. As humans, we are always looking for the next best thing, and the next best thing right now is social media.
As students and professionals begin utilizing this media, their conceptual knowledge of the working world will be changed forever.
Not only can we stay connected with friends, colleagues and other professionals in our field, we can increase our intellectual depth by receiving constant updates from the news.
For Emily Jeter, a senior majoring in public relations at Auburn University, social media has become a large part of her daily routine.
Jeter said, “Social media has a large impact on my life to date. I am required to utilize many different social media sites within my major. It may have taken me a while to discover what social media is all about, but I can already see it having a large impact on my life.” Jeter went on to say that she’s already been networking with public relations practitioners from all over the United States through Twitter
Although social media has had a large impact on the field of public relations, it is important to note that many professions are beginning to jump on the social media bandwagon.
From teleconferencing to sending Evites
, major universities and corporations all over the world are beginning to realize the benefits of utilizing social media.
For those of you who haven’t even begun to ponder how much of an impact social media can have on your life, you will realize soon enough.
As social media moves to the forefront of importance in the workplace, employees should soon expect to be required to sign up and utilize many different sites on a regular basis.
If you feel that you are too archaic for such a movement, think again. Once you have mastered the internet, you can master social media.
If the idea of learning something new scares you, overcome it. Social media can only hold promise in your future.
With the digital age progressing at such a rapid rate, so will social media. Don’t let it pass you by.
Unlike many other social movements that require individuals to conform, this one requires uniqueness. Be yourself and put your ideals out there.
If you are worried about which media to use, find one that is unique to you.
If you like to write, consider a blog. If you like to make videos, consider YouTube. If you like to be the center of attention, create your own website dedicated to your interests. If none of these suggestions strike your fancy, start a social media site of your own.
For those of you still wondering where to start, find tutorials online or on iTunes. Many are free and will walk you through the various steps to beginning your life online.
Once you become active online, you will hold the key to your success. Take the time to explore your options and don’t let this opportunity pass you by.
