Social media replacing social interaction

Social media is evolving and if you aren’t on board it will just pass you by, leaving you left clueless and behind the times. Why are people joining social media?

Keeping up friendships is a reason that holds true for most people. More than 67 million people worldwide are using social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace which are tools to maintain friendships and see what your old high school friends are up to.

“It’s sad to say, but I don’t remember how I lived before Facebook, Twitter and YouTube,” says Kate Beiser, social media intern at the Auburn Alumni Association. “I use these sites several times daily. Keeping up with friendships and news is important to me and social media is a great way to accomplish both,”

Facebook used to be exclusive to just those with a college e-mail address. Since that has changed, more and more people from all over the world are joining Facebook. Phone calls are not used as often now with the entrance of these social media sites. People don’t need to call you up; they can see what you are doing on your Facebook profile. Social pressure is there for all to join.

Another reason to join the social media age is to make new friends; even meet your future husband. Match.com and eHarmony are dating sites that allow you to post a personality profile to see who is compatible with you.
There is a dating site for almost every demographic including people over 50, single farmers, Asians, single parents, etc. Is technology helping people to find their soul mates now?

“Technology is changing everyday and is becoming more and more useful and easier to use with each change,” says Beiser.

Social media is making a huge impact and organizations and people that are not using it will be left in the dust.
