The Beta Lambda chapter of Auburn University’s Tau Kappa Epsilon will be having their Fourth Annual “Run for Reagan” event April 19, at 4:30 p.m. Run for Reagan is a 5K marathon benefiting the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Alzheimer’s Research Institute in Chicago, Ill.
President Ronald Reagan was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Eureka College. In 1994, Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at age 83. Alzheimer’s is an incurable disorder which causes brain cells to die.
The Ronald and Nancy Reagan Alzheimer’s Research Institute was founded in 1995 and is dedicated in “accelerating the progress of Alzheimer’s disease research.” Around 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The Reagan institute uses a biological approach for research. Nancy Reagan, first lady, has been proactive in the use of embryonic stem cell research to cure Alzheimer’s disease.
The fraternity adopted Alzheimer’s disease as their official philanthropy in 2001. Tau Kappa Epsilon has been committed to raising $240,000 for the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute. Since February 2009, the fraternity has raised $329,842.
After the “Run for Reagan,” the top two male and female marathon winners will receive trophies. Participants will be entered into a raffle where prizes will be handed out after the run. Spirit points will also be given to those participating for Auburn University organizations.
Registration will be held the week before the race on the concourse and also on the day of the event at the fraternity house.
On Tuesday, April 7, there will be a fundraiser at Cheeburger Cheeburger in downtown Auburn. From 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. you can eat to support Alzheimer’s disease. The new sorority on campus, Kappa Alpha Theta, is also hosting this event. By bringing in the event flyer that will be handed out on campus, Cheeburger Cheeburger will donate 15 percent of their sales.
