As you enter the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center, unique art work lines the hallways and people from all different disciplines are checking in so they can hear Dr. Patricia Arredondo, one of the featured inaugural speakers for the Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity conference, give her lecture.
In a world where diversity is an issue, Auburn University students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to attend the first Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity conference called “Understanding Differences that Matter: Diversity Research at Auburn University” on Oct. 29-30, 2008.
The conference had two nationally recognized speakers, an art contest and an awards presentation.
The Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity defines diversity as the differences among people that matter socially and culturally. These categories include race, sex, socio-economic status, belief systems, gender identity, age, geographic origin, physical disabilities and sexual orientation.
George Crandell, acting associate dean for the graduate school, came to the conference to hear the distinguished speaker.
“Diversity is one of the important goals of the university and the graduate school in terms of our recruiting efforts and our efforts to spread the word about our research across the campus,” said Crandell.
The Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity committee went to all the colleges on Auburn’s campus and found many professors were doing their own research in diversity. The conference was a way to bring all these people together so everyone can interact on the same level.
“In the 21st century I think a lot of disciplines are crossing boundaries and therefore it is important for people from different groups and different disciplines to come together and share ideas,” said Crandell.
The goal of the Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity was to facilitate and generate diversity research that is of the highest quality and that is current and relevant locally, nationally and globally.
