Everyone is invited to come celebrate "Read Across Auburn" month with a reading of
A Stranger in the Woods. “Read Across Auburn” is an event correlated with the National Education Association’s “Read Across America,” an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading.
This year, the award-winning book
A Stranger in the Woods will be read. This is a book by two nature photographers, Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick, who put up a snowman in the woods, then photographed the animals that came to visit. The movie, created by Sams' cousins, Laura and Robert Sams, based on the book will also be shown.
There will also be a chance to explore the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve’s library.
“
We have a small Discovery Room out at the Preserve that we keep displays, animals and our book collection. We have been collecting children's nature books for a while and have quite a nice collection,” said Jennifer Lolley, an administrator at the Preserve.
The reading will take place at the Preserve on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 p.m. Registration is required and admission is free for members and $2 for non-members. There will be hot cocoa and marshmallows served by the campfire for the reading. In the case of rain, the event will be held on Tuesday, March 2.
The Preserve is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. It includes ponds, waterfalls and streams. It is also home to reptile, fern and native wildflower viewing areas, a butterfly garden, an old homestead and barn, a turtle habitat and much more.
You don't have to be a member to visit and enjoy the Preserve and the events held there, but if you decide to become a member you will receive some benefits. You will receive your own copy of the
Plants Species Guide and Trail Highlights booklet, admission to member-only events, discounts on admission to programs and services and early admission and discounts on summer camps.
You may enter the Preserve from the gate on Hwy 147 North, across the highway and just north of the Auburn University fish ponds. To the left of the gate is a marquee displaying information about coming events.
Other events coming up at the Preserve include the swamp party on Saturday, March 27, and Forest Friends on Tuesdays beginning on March 30 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
