A sea of miniature dinosaurs, tigers, pumpkins and witches will flood Kiesel Park on Sunday, Nov. 1. But don’t be alarmed, these ferocious fur balls are nothing more than disguised pooches.
The Delta Zeta sorority of Auburn University will be hosting their annual charity event “Day at the Park” this Sunday to raise money for the Lee County Humane Society. Formerly called "Doggie Day," "Day at the Park" is a festival for friends of Auburn and their dogs.
The event will kick off at 11 a.m. with a Frisbee competition. A local band will provide the music and dog costume and trick contests will provide the entertainment. Last year’s costume champion was a puppy named Bentley dressed head to paw like a ‘gangster.’
Caitlyn Shatlock, a Delta Zeta at Auburn University, has participated in "Day at the Park" for the past two years. She is excited for this year’s festivities, but she is not the only member of her family looking forward to the event. Shatlock’s chocolate lab Brutus is also a "Day at the Park" regular.
“My mom and dad have brought Brutus every year,” said Shatlock. “Since I’m a senior, they can’t miss their last 'Day at the Park.' ”
Participation in the Frisbee game or the dog contests each cost $15. Those who wish to simply come and enjoy the festivities and doggie company will be charged $10. It will be an all day event that will last until 5 p.m. Participants will receive a T-shirt and there will be finger foods for all to enjoy.
The proceeds will be donated to the Lee County Human Society. Last year Delta Zeta raised nearly $6,000 from participants of "Day at the Park" and local businesses. They are hoping for an even larger turnout this year.
“It’s a really fun and relaxing way to come out and support the Lee County Humane Society,” said Shatlock. “The dog contests are a blast and sometimes there is a dog walk showing off all of the adorable pups.”
Delta Zeta will be promoting the adoption of animals from the Lee County Humane Society. Posters of pets up for adoption will be displayed throughout the park.
Shatlock encourages any dog lover to come, regardless if they own a dog or not.
“You don’t have to own a dog or be a great Frisbee player,” said Shatlock. “You can still come hang out, get a T-shirt and show your support.”
