The auditorium at Alabama Power was full of sleepy-eyed public relations students as everyone eagerly waited for what the 2009 PRSA Summit would hold for them. Students came from a variety of universities all over Alabama to learn about creativity and structure in public relations.

Students were able to enjoy a complimentary breakfast and lunch while listening to a number of speakers broadcast their experience in PR and the different aspects of the PR world today. A row of panelists from an assortment of different types of PR and marketing professions answered specific questions from public relations students.

“ My favorite part of the PRSA Summit was getting to network and meet a whole bunch of PR professionals in and around the Birmingham area, and I got to have lunch with the president of O2 Ideas which I think was a very valuable opportunity,” said Audrey Pannell, Auburn University student.

Students were also given the opportunity to have their resumes critiqued by professionals at the summit. “The resume critiques were helpful. It was good to break out into smaller groups so it was less intimidating to ask questions. Plus, you got a lot of personal attention,” said Kelly Cargill, Auburn University student.

Young, hopeful public relations students practiced networking through out the summit as well. A number of PR professionals were present and you were welcome to walk up to them and ask them any questions you may have or simply get to know them better and find out what they do.

“I met with Brandon Wilson. He's an Auburn alum and he helped organize the event. I wanted to know how he got to where he is. What did he do in college to help him get there? He's going to help put me in touch with AU alums in Arkansas,” said Cargill.

The summit also provided a keynote speaker, Rosanna Fiske, to address the students. Former vice president of Ketchum Miami, she spoke with students about her past in PR and marketing and how she continued to gain success in her field.

After listening to a couple of vital speakers, students were able to take a tour of Alabama Power which gave them the chance to experience what goes on behind closed doors of the establishment.

Towards the end of the long, yet beneficial day, everyone stayed seated and listened to a few professionals speak about interviewing techniques and how to prevent your boss from having new hire remorse. Professionals from all across the industry educated students on a number of ways to help them land a job and maintain it.

The summit allowed many opportunities for students seeking a position in the world of PR. “I thought the summit was incredibly beneficial. It was great to hear from people inside the industry rather than just learning about PR in general. I would strongly recommend students attend future summits,” said Cargill.
