PR Intern Using Social Media Networks Everyday

As a PR student at Auburn University, we learn about different kinds of social media networks in the Style & Design in PR Messages class. Robert French, the instructor, emphasizes how important these networks are and encourages us to join a few of them while in his class.

Most students are already on Facebook and MySpace, not realizing that they are social media networks. But other websites such as The Loveliest Village and WarEagle.Me are more specifically targeted towards Auburn University PR students, faculty and staff.

One website French created and highly encourages us to join is PROpenMic, which is geared for public relations students and practitioners all over the world.

Lindsey Jones, a senior who is currently interning with the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, is still using PROpenMic, as well as other social media sites, in her everyday life

"Everyday I check them all, and they are a great fundamental tool for functioning and connecting with people and it's a great way, as a PR practitioner to be able to promote what I do and what I'm capable of," Jones said.

PROpenMic is very beneficial for public relations students because you are able to connect with practitioners and firms all over the world such as Edelman, which is a top PR Agency in the United States. For students, being a member of PROpenMic is a major opportunity to search for internships and jobs.

"Really, it's a great tool to be able to connect to people that I wouldn't have the opportunity to if it didn't exist," Jones said.

I explained to Jones that Robert French has allowed his Style & Design classes to run and manage two of the social media websites over the past weeks and asked for her opinion on what changes she would like to see made.

"One thing that could make it more beneficial is a place where you can upload your resume. That way, all the people that are already on there in the PR field that are looking for people to hire, can just pull up a word document of their resume and see what all they're capable of." Jones said.

So for all the younger public relations students or anyone interested in public relations, PROpenMic is a great way to be connected to practitioners all over the world. Take advantage of this website because it is a wonderful opportunity!
