For more than 15 years Auburn residents watched the native azaleas, yoshino cherry trees and other flowers in the area bloom along the Auburn Floral Trail and around the city.
This year, the Auburn Floral Trail will be on display from March 18-April 4. The trail includes 14 miles of flowers the Auburn area has to offer. The Floral Trail is sponsored by the Auburn Beautification
Council (ABC) and the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau.
Residents of the area, Robert and Alice Crittenden, who are also committee chairs for the Auburn Floral Trail, are thankful to the community for their support.
"We're happy that the people of Auburn are willing to take the time and that the university is willing to take the time to let us come through their neighborhoods, and the people of Auburn are responsible for this trail being as beautiful as it is," Robert Crittenden said. "Without them there would be no trail."
There are two separate trails that can be taken by car with walking trails within them. The first trail, which is 3.4 miles, is called the "North Trail." The driving part of the trail starts on North College
Street circling around North Cary Drive, Hickory Lane and other streets and ends back on North College Street.
The second trail, known as the "South Trail," is 10.5 miles starting on South College Street and covering Chewacla State Park, Samford Avenue, Dean Road and other parts of the city.
"If you're going to take the trail [I suggest] that you do it on two different occasions, one in the first week and one toward the second week because things bloom at different times of year," Crittenden said. "Some will be blooming before then and some will start to bloom later in the trail dates."
Brochures including maps of the trail routes are available soon for pick up at the Auburn City Hall, Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau, Blooming Colors and the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department.
"The Auburn Beautification Council is open to all the people of Auburn,"Crittenden said. "In fact, we have people outside the city of Auburn that love Auburn that come here for different events, and they are also members."
Optional trails around the city include the "Auburn University Arboretum Trail" starting at the South College intersection of South College and Samford Avenue and continuing to the Donald E. Davis Arboretum Located on Garden Drive next to the Auburn University President's Mansion.
