New talent hit Auburn’s downtown Friday night as Marv and the Stikky Bandits performed their first gig together and Bourbon Street bar. Performing along with Top Shelf and Charlie Muncaster the bands played from midnight to 2 a.m.
Made up of five members, Marv and the Stikky Bandits consider themselves a jam band, with similar sounds to Keller Williams, Umphrey’s McGee and Bob Marley.
So how did Marv and the Stikky Bandits come to be? Bass player David Chenault gives a little insight into who the band is and where they plan to go.
“The band came together when Spencer Daniel, Troy Braswell, and I started jamming.” Even though they were known by a different name, and did not have all five members yet, this is where Marv and the Stikky bandits began.
Asking around if any drummers were interested in joining them, they met the fourth member John English Babington who also brought along the last and final member, keyboardist, Casey Chilson.
“When we all got together for the first time it just kind of clicked and now we are Marv and the Stikky Bandits.” Formerly known by a different name, the band decided that it didn’t suit them and English eventually came up with Marv and the Stikky Bandits. His idea came from the movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
While taking small steps to get their name out, Marv and the Stikky Bandits still dreams of bigger and better. When asked what the ultimate place to perform would be Chenault had no hesitation in saying, “Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.” According to him, some of the best acoustics around have played there along with some of his favorite bands.
“We are very excited about Friday's performance. We have been preparing to be sure everyone is going to have a good time listening to us,” David said. Prior to Friday nights show, Chenault couldn’t express enough that a successful show will be one that everyone simply has a good time at, and that’s just what happened.
“The band was great and rocked out hard. It was really crowded and people were dancing and just having a great time,” said Cy Burleson, band fan and friend of Chenault’s.
Now that their first performance as a band is under their belt, Marv and the Stikky Bandits hope to continue performing at local Auburn bars as well as fraternity band parties.
