Auburn’s basketball season may be over, but that doesn’t mean that Auburn students have tuned out. This weekend, April 4, 2009 was the final four college basketball game. Auburn students are sure to be checking their brackets and glued to their television in anticipation over which two teams will head to the championship game Monday night April 6.
The NCAA Men’s Final Four games were help in Ford Field in Detroit, Mich., a city that has been hit hard by the suffering economy. The entire arena was used, including risers that were constructed from ground level and went as high as the first 20-25 rows of the lower-bowl stands. This gave fans seated in higher section an unobstructed view of the action. Additionally, an octagon-shaped video board hung from center court giving fans, particularly those in the upper bowl, close-up shots of the game as well s the replays. The camera used for the Final Four games were placed on the end of a 40-foot arm, which enabled dramatic shots of the fans as well as the players on the court. Because the base was on wheels, the camera was able to give different perspectives throughout the telecast.
More than 70,000 people attended the games, including around 3,000 students from the four competing colleges who sat in the end zones. The four teams that played were Connecticut, appearing in the Final Four for the 3rd time, versus Michigan State, appearing in the Final Four for the 7th time and Villanova, appearing for the 2nd time versus The University of North Carolina, appearing for the 18th time.
This year’s Final Four teams surprised many, but each school showed great integrity and skill to get to this position. President Obama’s bracket showed Louisville, North Carolina, Memphis and Pittsburg going to the Final Four, as did many others’ brackets.
Michigan State played Connecticut Saturday night and won with a score of 82-73. Michigan State will advance to the championship game, and it will be its first appearance for the title game since 2000 when the Spartans won its second title. Michigan State will face the University of North Carolina who defeated Villanova Saturday night with a score of 83-69.
These two teams will have a re-match after they met in the same stadium in December with the Tarheels coming out with a 35-point victory. Although the facts point to a North Carolina victory, you cannot always rely on that. North Carolina coach Roy Williams said,
“We are a confident team, but we will not be overconfident Monday night," North Carolina Coach Roy Williams said. "We will be intense. We will have a sense of urgency. My team will not be overconfident."
Auburn senior, Brad Boston said he is excited to watch the championship game. Boston said it is fun to fill out a bracket and follow each game and then finally watch it all come down to the two best teams of the season face each other.
“I don’t really care about the outcome of the game, I am just excited to watch two great teams play each other,” Boston said.
The championship game tips off Monday night at 9:21 p.m. ET.
