Auburn University’s Alpha Gamma Delta chapter of is hosting a talent competition called Wing Jam at Buffalo Connection on Tuesday, March 31. The proceeds from the event all go to raising money and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The JDRF leads worldwide research on type 1 diabetes research. The JDRF is a volunteer based organization aimed at bringing awareness, raising funds for research and, ultimately, finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Approximately 3 million people in the United States are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes; a cure for this chronic disease has yet to be found.
As result of this, every year, Alpha Gamma Delta is dedicated to hosting an event to support the foundation and raising money for research. These young ladies will waitress and serve at Buffalo Connection while hosting a citywide talent competition.
The event is comparable to an "open mic night" where performers pay a fee to play or sing and then are voted on by audience members. The sorority members will pass buckets around as each act performs and members of the audience can vote on the act by putting dollar bills in each bucket.
The performances range from full on bands to a girl on a stool with a guitar. All talents are welcome and the top three performances get cash prizes.
Last year 700 students attended the event and the event raised over 10 thousand dollars for diabetes research.
Alpha Gamma Delta's Philanthropy Coordinator, Courtney Blythe, is hopeful that this years event will have even greater success.
"Last year's event went incredibly well and we were able to raise a lot of money," said Blythe, "I hope that this year we will not only match that, but beat it."
Members of Alpha Gamma Delta are excited about the event as well.
"Wing Jam is something that all of us enjoy," said Smith, "we look forward to doing this every year because it is our main philanthropic event and it's a time we can have fun while supporting something we believe in."
The event's MC will be Auburn football's running back, Tristan Davis.
"Every year we have someone MC who the students all know and they enjoy," said Smith, "It offers more recognition to the event to have someone like Tristan endorse it."
Many students have enjoyed this event previously because, unlike many other sorority events, it doesn't include a run or walk. It's simply eating wings and listening to music.
"Wing Jam is great because you can relax, eat good food and listen to good music all for a great cause," said Alpha Gamma Delta member Mary-Francis Colley.
Tuesday at 8 pm, come join Alpha Gamma Delta in supporting diabetes research by eating at Buffalo Connection. T-shirts will also be sold at the event and those proceeds will benefit JDRF as well.
"We encourage anyone and everyone to come out to Wing Jam on Tuesday, it's an exciting event," said Blythe, "We don't want you to miss it!"
Spots are still available if you would like to perform. You can contact Courtney Blythe by email at blythcm@auburn.edu.
