Auburn University has around 34 active honors societies. Each society is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). The ASCHS is “the nation's only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.” Similar to sororities and fraternities, there is a recruitment process and only a certain number of applicants are chosen.
Many people join honor societies to be recognized for their involvement and GPA. “I wanted to get more involved and help build my resume,” says Elizabeth Vodde, senior and public administration major. Vodde is a new initiate of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. “My sorority is completely different from my honor society. I joined the Pi Sigma Alpha for a completely different reason. Making friends wasn’t my intention, but I have and I’m happy with my decision to join,” says Vodde.
Pi Sigma Alpha is the only political science honor society in the United States. The requirements to join are junior, senior or graduate standing, a 3.0 overall GPA and must have completed a certain number of credit hours in political science classes.
Other honor societies on campus include Phi Alpha Theta, Beta Beta Beta, Tau Sigma and Alpha Pi Mu. The majority of the honors societies on campus have a spring and fall initiation. Pi Sigma Alpha is no exception. Applications can be found in different departmental offices and online.
