Auburn University is involved with so many student activities. We have heard about all the events with the UPC, different clubs that people can join and even classes for learning Chinese. One of my favorite student activities is the campus radio station, WEGL 91.1.
I knew we had a campus radio station but I did not know anything about it. I did not know what station it was on, I did not know that students could DJ and I did not know how easy it was to get involved with this program.
Last spring semester a couple of my friends were DJ’s. They were on the air from 9-11 every Tuesday and Thursday night. They called their show, “The Greatest Show Ever.” They would call me up a few times and get me to say something on the radio. Soon afterwards, I started to guest DJ. I tried to guest host with them as many times as I could. It was so much fun answering phones, deciding what songs to play and reading the news and weather on the air. I even got to promote my boyfriend's band.
Rules are pretty lax when you have your own show. There are a few stipulations that you have to follow. You have to read the news and weather at designated times during the show; you have to play announcement commercials and you have to play a certain number of local band's songs. Other than these things, you can basically do, say and play what you want (no profanity though).
My favorite part in guest hosting was just talking on air with my friends. I loved how laid back it was and I loved the fact that I was doing something that would benefit my career in the future.
I will definitely be putting my guest hosting duties on my resume when I try and get a job. Being a public relations major, helping out with a radio show can go a long way. I am very proud of myself for having the guts to get on the air. At first I was nervous but when I got on, it just became so easy and second nature to me. I was surprised at how the words just flowed when I was on air. It will be a positive thing when my future employer sees that I have had experience being on air and connecting with the public in a mass media type of way.
Before the summer, my friends decided to quit having the show. I was really disappointed that I would not get to guest DJ anymore. I was becoming accustomed to being at the station every Tuesday/Thursday night.
During the fall semester, WEGL has moved to the new student union building. I have heard mixed reviews about which studio is better, the new or the old one. I haven’t seen the new one yet so I am looking forward to when I can take a look. My friends tried to get their show back on for the fall but the waiting list was so long that they couldn’t get in. WEGL 91.1 is a great thing for students listening to the broadcast and those wanting to get practice doing that type of thing for their majors.
