Help Literacy in Alabama on April 11th

The Junior League of Lee County will be hosting the Art Walk/Run on
Saturday, April 11th, at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., the timed run then starts at 9:15
a.m.and then finely the walk begins at 9:30 a.m.

This 1.5 mile walk or 5k run includes a free T-shirt, a goodie bag and
refreshments before and after the event. The registration fee is $15
before April 1 and $20 after April 1.

The Junior League Art Walk/ Run funds that are raised will support
various community organizations that focus on arts and literacy for the
children of Lee County. These particular organizations include:
-the Reading Initiative of the Junior League
-Alabama Council on Human Relations
-Lee County Literacy Coalition
-Lee County Public Schools
-Boys & Girls Club
-City of Auburn Parks & Recreation
-Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

"Rain or shine on Saturday. We have goodie bags and T-shirts for all
participants and the registration fee is $20," said Summer Vaughn, the
2009 chair of the Art Walk/ Run for Children. "We have inflatables for
the children. We have Chick-Fil-A and all kinds of yummy treats. And we
will have live music along the route and then after wards their will be
activities for children at the museum."

The Association of Junior Leagues International is an organization of
women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of
women and improving communities through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers. With leagues in 292 communities
including Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and United States, the Junior
League helps to build stronger communities.

The Junior League was founded in 1901 by Mary Harriman, a 19-year old
debutante with a heart of social consciousness. Later she gathers 80 young
women forming the league to help with child health, nutrition and
literacy among immigrants living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

In 2008, The Association of Junior Leagues International won American
Society of Association Executives (ASAE) & The Center for Leadership
Summit Award and Award for Excellence for Junior Leagues' Kids in the
Kitchen program.

The Junior League asks for community and corporate sponsors and also
vendor opportunities to involve many. The community sponsors play a
major role and are highly visible within the Junior League. The
corporate sponsors help with Association events and some of these
include Talbots, The Cartoon Network or Spanx. And lastly are vendor
opportunities which are interested in supplying goods or services that
would be beneficiary to a local Junior League.


The Junior League of Lee County has over 100 women members who live and
work in Lee County, AL. If you are interested in joining the Junior
League of Lee County and meet the following criteria:
-possess an interest in voluntarism,
-possess a commitment to community service
-have an interest in developing her potential for voluntary
community participation
-have reached her 24 birthday during the calendar year in which
she will be a Leaguer in Training (first year member)
-live or work within a twenty-five mile radius of Lee County,
Alabama.
