AUBURN—At approximately 6 p.m., Oct. 6, 2011, the Auburn Fire Department received a phone call notifying them of a fire in Hargis Hall.
Deputy Fire Chief Rodney Hartsfield responded to the call with the Auburn Fire Department to discover a small fire in the bell tower of the building.
Hartsfield says most of the damage to the building was relating to the sprinklers, which were set off by the smoke detectors. The building was vacant at the time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However the fire department will be closely monitoring the situation until morning when they will be able to find out exactly what caused the fire.
“The damage stayed in the bell tower up at the top so it was an attic style fire,” Hartsfield says, “which is the reason we want to take our time with the sunlight to make sure we’re safe up there too.”
Hargis Hall is the graduate school building located between Samford Hall and Biggin Hall on South College Street.
