It is that time of year again, Greek Week is quickly approaching. Those in charge are taking care of the last minute details and sorority and fraternity members are planning their winning strategies. The team that wins Greek Week gets bragging rights as well as many valuable spirit points.
Gabrielle Hoyt is the administrative vice president of Auburn’s Panhellenic Council. She is helping to plan Greek Week this year.
“We have lots of great ideas for this year’s Greek Week, and we are very excited to see how the week goes,” said Hoyt.
She and the other members of Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council have been planning Greek Week for months.
Greek Week is going to be Oct. 9-14 and the schedule for the week has been set.
To start, there will be a kick-off dinner on Sunday Oct. 9. All of the teams are invited to participate and enjoy free food.
On Monday, all sorority and fraternity members are supposed to wear their letters to class and check in at the Greek Week table on the concourse. On Monday night, there will be a special event called Greek Olympics. Many of the participants in the Greek Olympics are also participants in the Miss Greek Week pageant. The pageant will be on Tuesday night.
Each sorority has nominated one girl to represent them in the pageant. Each representative will be judged on answering an on-stage question as well as game day and evening wear.
On Wednesday there will be an all day carnival. The carnival is for all Greek life members and for members of the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County.
“This carnival is going to be so much fun for the kids that get to come,” said Hoyt. “I’m sure they will be smiling the whole time.”
There will be a barbeque on Thursday especially for all the new members of sororities and fraternities. This barbeque is meant to be a welcome into Greek life.
On Saturday, Oct. 15 the winner of Greek Week will be announced at the football game. The winner will be determined by points. The points are given for participation and for winning competitions.
The purpose of Greek Week is to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County.
“We want to unite all Greek students for the purpose of giving back to the community,” said Hoyt.
In addition to the daily events during the week, there will be certain restaurants at which sorority and fraternity members will be encouraged to eat. Eating at the restaurants will result in points for their team if they sign the back of their receipt with their team name.
There are going to be about six teams. Each team will consist of a few sororities and fraternities.
“All of us on the planning committee are very excited to see how our hard work will pay off,” said Hoyt. “May the best team win.”
