Benefiting Rescue K-911, dogs and their owners will dress up in Halloween costumes for the fourth annual “Howl’oween Costume and Dog Parade” next week.
All proceeds go towards Rescue K-911, a private non-profit no kill shelter that is ran solely on donations. Larry and Loraine Weaver are the directors of Rescue K-911 and are currently caring for more than 140 dogs that are waiting for adoption. The shelter is also run by other volunteers.
“Loraine and Larry both work full time jobs as well as taking care of all the animals,” said Jill Bonneau, the event organizer and owner of Canine American Dog Boutique in downtown Opelika.
There will also be prizes given out at the event. Categories include “Best Dog Costume,” “Best Dog/Owner Theme,” “Best Child and Dog,” and “Best Group” (must have more than one dog and owner to be considered a group).
“First place in the best group category wins our biggest prize, 100 pounds of premium dog food,” said Bonneau. “Other prizes include gift certificates to Canine American, spa days for the owners and spa products for the dogs. Each category has first, second and third place.”
The event also welcomes spectators. In the past, hundreds of spectators have participated. Last year there were 187 dogs that participated and this year they are hoping to have more than 200. Many of the local businesses downtown participates as well. The dogs can trick-or-treat by being given goody bags that the local businesses have provided.
The parade will take place on Monday, Oct. 26. The activities will start at 5:30 p.m. and the parade will begin at 6 p.m.
“The parade starts at the corner of Eighth Street and South Railroad Avenue,” said Jill Bonneau, the event organizer and owner of Canine American Dog Boutique in downtown Opelika. “It will make an L shape and then return back at the starting location.”
Registering for the event can be done at Canine American located at 108 S. Eighth St. inside the Heritage Gifts and Gourmet building. It is $10 per dog to register. Pet owners can also have their dog be a “very important pouch” by paying $25.
“You can register on the day of the event, but lines are usually really long,” said Bonneau. “If you can preregister it will save time. Preregistering is also done here, at Canine American.”
“Tigertown Veterinary Hospital will be here to do micro chipping,” said Bonneau.”All proceeds go to the Rescue. ‘Canine Candids,’ professional photos, will also be taken of the dogs that enter the parade by Flip Flop Floto.”
