Have you ever thought about what you wanted to do when you graduate? Have you ever had a fear that working inside eight hours out of the day might kill you or even drive you mad?
If so, you’ll be glad to know that Auburn University has a yearly event, accurately titled “Outdoor U.”
“Outdoor U” is an event put on by the College of Agriculture and the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences that publicizes outdoor careers.
Although “Outdoor U” has already occurred for the year of 2008, it isn’t too late to find out more information to prepare yourself for next year's event.
This was their second annual event and it is their hope to continue doing it from years to come.
Debra Solie, Coordinator of Student Services for the College of Agriculture, said, “Outdoor U is an annual event that we like to put on to publicize the fact that not all jobs require an indoor position. We have different schools and colleges being represented from Auburn University at these events, and it is our hope that we can get the word out about how great working outdoors really is.”
The groups, schools and colleges represented at this event included: the College of Agriculture, the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, Biosystems Engineering, the Marine Biology Club, the Bass Fishing Club and Career Services.
Each group that was represented had a represenative from that organization to answer questions and do demonstrations, as well as have selected speakers who actually work in an outdoor profession.
When asked to make a comment on the one thing students need to know about outdoor careers, Ms. Solie responded, “The main thing that I would like to express to all students is that the career opportunities are really numerous. We have tons of students on campus who don’t really know what to do with their lives and what they fail to realize is, if you have a hobby you enjoy doing or have a passion for, you can have a career in it as well.”
For those of you seeking more information on outdoor careers, you can visit next year’s event that takes place in the fall or contact someone in the College of Agriculture or the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. Their advisor's are more than willing to talk to you and help direct you down a path that you would like to take.
If meeting with another adviser on campus other than your own doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, visit Career Services. Ms. Solie has given her word that there are representatives in the Career Services office that can help you obtain more information on multiple careers. You can take job aptitude tests or simply talk with someone that has been in your position before.
So next year when you're feeling down about what direction your life will be taking, visit “Outdoor U” and entertain the idea of having an outdoor career.
