Earth Fare may have planted its roots in Asheville, North Carolina, but this healthy supermarket has continued to branch into new cities. The next Earth Fare grand opening is taking place today, Wednesday, June 23, in Auburn, Alabama.
Earth Fare advocates healthy alternatives to harmful products. But not everyone knows that certain masked ingredients can be harmful, especially in large quantities.
For example, Coca-Cola Classic is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, while Diet Coke is enhanced with artificial sweeteners. Both of these ingredients are counter-intuitive to a healthy lifestyle and are among the eight food philosophies that Earth Fare advocates against.
“High fructose corn syrup doesn’t satisfy your hunger. Companies put this in products because it’s cheap, but it causes the country to be overweight.” said Jack, an Earth Fare customer in Huntsville, Alabama. Jack continues, “I’m also against artificial sweeteners. People think that they are eating something that doesn’t have any calories, but the chemicals negatively affect the body.”
Travis, General Manager in Auburn, does not personally drink soda, but says Earth Fare offers this beverage, as well as other tasty alternatives with natural sugars. “We have Izze, which is a natural soda, Virgil’s, and Blue Sky.”
Earth Fare also offers a wide assortment of beer, wine, juice, coffee, tea, and water, and further houses a smoothie station located within the café. “We have a juice bar, fruit bar, and fresh squeezed vegetables juices. We have wheat grass, which is a natural detoxification,” Travis said.
Travis explains a surprising facet that makes Earth Fare unique and honest, “For a long time, we use to actually sell the Coca-Cola Vitamin Water, and then they actually reformulated their product and added in crystalline fructose, which is similar to high fructose corn syrup. At that point, we decided to completely boot that product out of our store, and we developed our own Earth Fare natural Vitamin Enhanced Water.”
He says that if a company does reformulate a product without notice and the new composition includes booted ingredients, the company will be fined, and the item will not be sold at Earth Fare. If a customer finds a product on the shelf with a booted ingredient, Earth Fare will award that customer with a 50-dollar gift card. “We won’t deviate on our standards,” said Travis.
Joey, a recent college graduate, is looking forward to investing in Earth Fare’s Vitamin Water and other sports drinks. “I don’t drink soda because of an enzyme deficiency in my liver, known as Gilbert’s syndrome. Because drinks like soda have a lot of sugar and artificial flavors, it speeds up dehydration. This causes me to have too much bilirubin in my bloodstream, which causes jaundice. I was told that I should stay away from sodas, and stick to drinking fruit juices, water, and milk.”
With a comparative price of only one dollar per individual bottle, Travis claims Earth Fare’s Vitamin Water with only 13 grams of sugar is cheaper than the Coca-Cola brand with an astounding 32 grams. With that price, customers like Jack and Joey can rest assure they are receiving high quality and a great value.
