Voting is so important in today’s society. If you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice. And while many students don’t have residency in Auburn, we are taking it upon ourselves to drive to back to our hometowns to place our vote.
If students didn’t request absentee ballots, driving to their hometowns is their only option if they want to vote for the next president. Alabama, Florida and Georgia polling locations are open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“I was thinking about it and I’m going to have to drive back to Atlanta tonight so that I can vote in the morning. I’m going to be cutting it close since I have to work at nine tomorrow morning, but it’s worth it. I think it’s important,” explained senior Ashley Krausen.

“I am actually registered to vote in Alabama, even though my main residence is in Georgia, because I pay taxes here. They’ve never given me a problem about it before so I’ll probably go and vote tomorrow morning. My nine o’clock class actually got cancelled so that we could go and vote so I’ll most likely do it then,” said Kristen Sprinkle, a senior majoring in political science.

It’s definitely important for our generation to get out and vote this year. In the past, the under 30 crowd hasn’t really been a major factor in the elections; some people don’t think that their vote matters while others just don’t care about politics. But it really makes a difference.

Both candidates in this year’s election have made a strong pull to encourage everyone to vote, despite their age, income or status. MTV has also done their part to get young voters involved. In 2004, MTV started a campaign entitled “Vote or Die.” While it was attacked by critics for being harsh, all MTV wanted to do was to get young viewers to realize their opinions mattered and that is exactly what they did. They continued the campaign in the current election and encouraged many people to get involved who hadn’t had any plans on voting. In the 2004 election, more than 21 million people under the age of 30 voted. MTV has an entire section of their website devoted to voting including all the issues involved in this years election, how to register, where the candidates stand on topics and discussion forums.

Just by turning on the TV in recent months, viewers have been bombarded with the issue of voting. It really is that important. Kate Woods, a senior public relations major proclaimed, “As young Americans, it is our duty to vote. We are the generation for change and it is up to us to cast our vote and make the change happen.”
