Camp War Eagle: Training the Best for the Best

We all remember that terrifying day. The day that our parents waved goodbye and drove off never to be seen again...or at least for two and a half days. The day we began our official orientation to Auburn's campus.

For some, Camp War Eagle is a great experience where they meet many new friends, make lasting memories and become eager to start school come August. For others (namely, me) it was a time when we were terrified and never wanted to set foot in the town, let alone the campus, of Auburn again.

For an out-of-stater like myself, being a camper at Camp War Eagle was an intimidating experience. Luckily, for our younger counterparts though, the people behind Camp War Eagle are going the extra mile to ensure the camp provides the same experience for everyone.

Sophomore Bailey DeBardeleben will be a counselor this summer at Camp War Eagle.

"I really enjoyed my Camp War Eagle experience coming through as a freshmen, so it really motivated me to be a counselor to make all the freshmen's experiences just as great as mine was."

DeBardeleben has been going through a vigorous training program since January.

"We have training once a week for three hours where we learn Auburn knowledge and take tests on it. We just learn how to be a good counselor!"

Counselors also have to take a test that evaluates their knowledge of the buildings in traditions of Auburn.

For example, counselors must know, by heart the following information:

"The Haley Center was built 1969, named after Paul S. Haley, who was an Auburn trustee for 51 years. In those 51 years, he only missed one meeting. At ten stories tall, it's the tallest building in Lee County despite rumors. It houses the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts as well at the University Bookstore. At the top of the building is the Eagle's Nest which has meeting rooms and a balcony overlooking all of campus. Only War Eagle Girls and Plainsmen, Student Recruiters and a few other authorized personnel on campus have access to it," DeBardeleben recited from memory without any hesitation.

On May 10, the counselors will start an even more intense training program for ten days before the campers arrive. Among many others it entails the counselors memorizing the schedule, listening to speakers from offices on campus and further preparing the two skits shown at Camp War Eagle.

"Camp is two and a half days for incoming freshmen. They stay in the dorms. The main purpose is to orient them to Auburn's campus, show them around, for them to schedule their classes for the fall and help them transition from high school to college.

Camp War Eagle goes from May 20 to July 10. For more information on Camp War Eagle, click here
