This weekend marked the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga. The Augusta National Golf Club opened in December 1932 with a limited amount of member play and then officially opened in January 1933. The first tournament took place the following year, marking the first radio broadcast of the coverage as well.

This year the practice round was last week on April 6, 7, and 8 and the competitive rounds took place on April 9,10, 11 and 12.

The Masters was full of twists and turns and hushed voices from the crowd. Watching was almost uncomfortable because the silence was so apparent all you could hear were the birds chirping.

After a long struggle, Angel Cabrera, 39, won his first green jacket after ten appearances at the Masters. Cabrera was also the first Argentine to win the Masters. He finished after a three-way play-off with a score of -12. Cabrera is originally from Argentina, and he has had a total of 17, against Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell, international victories. He won the Argentine Open in 2001 and has had four PGA European Tour victories.

He had seven top 25 finishes in 2008, which was a career high. This included a T20 finish at the PGA, a T25 at the Masters and a T5 finish at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Cabrera captured his first major at the 2007 U.S. Open. Cabrera’s ten appearances at the Masters have left him with 4 top 15 finishes. He now has two

Cabrera shot a final round 71 for a total of 276. Despite everyone wanting a Mickelson-Woods play-off for the title, Cabrera came out with the win and the best game of golf.

"This is the Masters. A lot of magical things happen," Cabrera said. "I was happy with my game and I had confidence. I was just trying to enjoy the moment."

Many Auburn students were lucky enough to get the chance to go to Augusta this weekend and attend the Masters. This was senior Matthew Cate’s first time to go, and he said it was incredible.

“ I was within arms length of Tiger Woods, and I even got a piece of his tee. I am going to keep it somewhere safe, so I can say I own something that Tiger Woods touched,” Cate said.”

Junior Merry Parker Whidby said she went to the Masters with her dad, and said it was something special that they could do together.

“ I had such a great time. It was so neat to be around so many great golfers and watch the tournament unfold. I also loved that I got to go with my dad. It will definitely be something I look back on with great memories,” Whidby said.

This year the Masters delivered a weekend that everyone was hoping for. It was full of excitement all over the beautiful course, including many birdies and eagles to get the crowd excited. Although Cabrera was not the winner that people were expecting, he was the deserved champion.
