As an Auburn student, you may have seen fliers while walking on campus or even heard other people talking about the student organization known as UPC. But what or who is UPC? It stands for University Program Council who is in charge of putting on events throughout each semester such as concerts, free movies, food workshops, comedians, speakers and Tiger Nights.
In the past, UPC has brought bands like Dierks Bentley, O.A.R., Chingy, Akon and Soulja Boy, Ludacris, Switchfoot and other well-known artists for its biannual free concerts. The assortment of genres is used to target different student-audiences so that everyone will have a chance to see a band of personal interest.
As a finals approach and summer is right around the corner, this year’s spring concert will be Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 with special guest Citizen Hope and will take place on the last day of class, Wednesday, April 29. The concert will be held in the Beard- Eaves Memorial Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.; however, doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
In 2008, Harper formed a new band, the Relentless 7, and will be releasing their album titled “What Lies for Dark Times” on May 5. His music is a mixture of alternative rock, folk rock, blues, Gospel, reggae and post-grunge. Harper won two Grammies in 2005 for best pop instrumental performance and best traditional soul Gospel album.
Tickets will be available on the Concourse from April 20 through April 29 between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a valid student ID.
On April 3, UPC hosted the spring Tiger Nights which is a late night event that has carnival activities and attractions as well as a small concert. Wax hands, cotton candy, caricatures, free food and inflatables are all part of the Tiger Nights experience. Bands such as Corey Smith, Matt Wertz, Augustana and Ryan Cabrera have each performed at previous Tiger Nights.
UPC has more than an incredible concert up its sleeve for the remaining three weeks of the semester. On Thursday, April 23 inside the one and only Jordan-Hare Stadium UPC will be showing “The Dark Knight” on the Jumbo Tron at 8 p.m. The event was originally scheduled for April 9, but due to Auburn’s A-Day game, on Saturday, April 18, the event was pushed back.
Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” recently won the Academy Award for best supporting actor.
With a stacked remaining lineup for the semester, UPC may earn the new name as the university’s most “Underrated Program on Campus.”
