Rammer Jammer Yellow hammer? Not on Tuesday, March 10 when Auburn defeated arch-rival University of Alabama with an 8-7 victory.
Auburn came into the Montgomery Capitol City Classic 11-4 wanting to continue its seven game winning streak. Although it was a close game the whole time, Auburn went from throwing strikes to win the game to throwing toilet paper at Toomer’s corner to celebrate.
In the first inning, Auburn started the game off with a 3-0 lead. Brian Fletcher hit a bases-loaded double off of the left-center field wall. They kept up the momentum in the second with a homerun by outfielder Trent Mummy; making it the team’s 30th thus far in the season and ranking second in the nation.
Alabama decided to show up in the bottom of the third with a three-run homerun hit by the country’s homerun leader Kent Matthes.
In the fourth, Auburn came back to score two more runs to make it 6-3. However, in the bottom of the 8th, Alabama took the lead for the first time of the game by scoring four runs.
With only three outs away from an Alabama victory, it looked grim for the Auburn Tigers.
Casey McElroy led-off the top of the ninth with a triple off the center-field wall.
Justin Harget hit a sacrifice fly-ball to bring in McElroy to tie the game.
Next up was Mummy, with a homerun earlier, hit a double down the right field line. With two outs and one runner on base, senior Ben Jones stepped up to bat.
Jones hit a 2-0 pitch off the left field wall to bring in Mummy to put Auburn ahead by one.
Auburn held Alabama in the bottom of the ninth with three-up-three-down by freshman pitcher Zach Blatt to put a “W” in the tiger’s column.
The evening wasn’t complete until fireworks painted the sky to make the win even sweeter-- if possible.
Jones, a mechanical engineer and scholar athlete from Decatur, Ala., was named MVP of the game for his clutch hit to win the game. Right fielder Jones was 3-for-5 for the night.
“It was a big win for us, “said Jones. “It’s a great feeling to bring home the win especially against Bama.”
This win was Auburn’s first 8th consecutive win since February 2007, but Coach Pawlowski’s longest streak as Auburn’s head coach.
Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium had its second largest crowd of 7,518 fans take in the rivalry heated game.
