After 14 years of competition between Auburn and its biggest rival, the Beat Bama Food Drive has collected over 1.5 million pounds of food for local food shelters. The University of Alabama and Auburn compete each year to see which community and campus can collect the most food. The competition started on Oct. 20 and ends Nov. 20.
Auburn has won nine of the past 14 years, but lost last year. Ashley Nichols, the director of this year’s food drive, said, “We’re hoping to reclaim that victory for this year. So far it’s looking pretty good.”
The goal has been set for 250,000 pounds. Nichols said last year Auburn raised 183,000 pounds, and the University of Alabama raised 240,000 pounds.
Drop-off locations can be found at 23 different locations on campus and about 40 other locations in the community. The large barrels are placed at prominent locations on campus such as Haley Center, SGA office, AU Bookstore and Lowder. Every grocery store has a barrel also. Others can be found at
beatbamafooddrive.com for a map and list of locations.
Virtual donations can be made on the Web site by clicking on the “Donate Now” button. It’s as simple as picking out the number of pounds you would like to donate and then entering in your payment information. Prices are reasonable with 1-pound donations costing 50 cents. All donations collected from the drive will be given to The Food Bank of East Alabama. So get to donating so Auburn can beat Bama!
