At 8 p.m. on Sunday September 11, students all over Auburn tuned in for the conclusion of season four of the popular show True Blood. The HBO show has become a pop culture phenomenon that is especially popular with college students. The show takes place in the fictional town of Bon Temps, La. and follows Sookie Stackhouse, who can read minds, through all of her trials and tribulations living in a world full of vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, witches, mediums, fairies and other mythical creatures.
Mary Haley Byrne is a senior at Auburn University and has been a fan of True Blood since it began in 2008. “The show has really evolved,” explains Byrne. “At first it was all about vampires and Sookie and Vampire Bill falling love. Now, there are so many more creatures and story lines, it can be hard to keep up.”
The season four finale left a lot of unanswered questions for fans to ponder for several months until the show returns for season five. “I don’t know what to think about Tara, I love her character and I do not think the producers would take her out of the show. I think either Eric or Bill will save her,” said Byrne.
Tara is Sookie’s best friend and fellow human. The last scene of the finale left Tara in Sookie’s arms after just being shot. Eric and Bill are vampires that are in love with Sookie. If a human drinks a vampire’s blood, they will be immediately healed, no matter how bad the injuries.
What about Russell Edgington? As fans know, Bill buried him alive in concrete at the end of season three. The season four finale showed a construction worker finding a hole in his work site where it seems he broke free. The worker shows Alcide, a werewolf friend of Sookie, and he looks very alarmed. Edgington was the vampire king of Mississippi and the show’s main antagonist in season three and now it seems he is back.
“I’m excited and nervous about Russell Edgington’s return. He is an evil character but he brings so much drama to the show and is so entertaining,” said Byrne. Since Sookie chose to be with neither Eric nor Bill, they will likely become a dynamic duo and join forces to kill Edgington once and for all.
Another tragic event in the finale was the death of Jesus, Lafayette’s boyfriend. Marnie, a dead witch determined on revenge, possesses Lafayette’s body and kills Jesus. “I was so sad when Jesus died; he and Lafayette were a great couple for the show. But, luckily since Lafayette is a medium, I think Jesus will continue to visit him throughout season five,” said Byrne.
As far as the love triangle consisting of Jessica, Hoyt and Jason, opinions vary. “I think that Jason did betray his best friend Hoyt, but Hoyt and Jessica did break up, so Jason is not doing anything technically wrong by being with Jessica,” said Byrne. This relationship triangle will indefinitely continue to develop as we move into season five.
Whether you are a die-hard fan of True Blood or just catch an episode now and then, the season four finale could not have done a better job of leaving you on the edge of your seat. “For those who are not fans, I would recommend at least giving the show a chance. Rent the first season and watch the first few episodes, and try not to get hooked,” said Byrne, laughing.
