Auburn Hockey Team Launches Fundraiser for Second Season

After years of trying and rejection, in the spring of 2010, directors and faculty at Auburn University approved the charter for an ice hockey organization after a 27-year hiatus. The team overcame hurdles to meet their goals and placed 6th in the SECHC.

The Tigers prepare for their second season with "A Spirit Not Afraid", a motto inspired by a line of the Auburn Creed. They hope to face this upcoming season with strength, confidence and the goal of improving their presence in the collegiate hockey world.

Being a club sport, the team receives no funding from Auburn University. As a result, the financial burden falls on players to fund the program. The team hopes that with the help of their new fundraiser and fan support, players will get the opportunity to compete at a lower out of pocket cost.

Auburn has collaborated with the online fund-raising campaign tool, IndieGoGo. This site provides organizations with a way to market their campaigns to the public and raise funds towards whatever theircause may be. The Tigers hope to use this tool to start their second season on the right foot.

The team’s projected budget for the 2011-2012 season is $60,000. This includes ice time, equipment, uniforms and travel expenses to name a few. Through this campaign, they hope to raise $5,000 as a starting point for this season.

The team has designed six different perk packages that vary by level of donation. Some of the rewards from the campaign are name on the Donor Roster on the website, a free ticket to a home game in the new arena in Columbus, Ga., an autographed team poster, Auburn Hockey t-shirts, and season tickets.

There are many ways to help and to stay connected to Auburn Hockey. Follow the Tigers on Facebookand Twitter, and visit their website for more updates from the team. Join in as these members of the Auburn family take on the SECHC with “A Spirit Not Afraid.”
