Auburn closed out the “Auburn Soccer Classic” with a 3-2 win against Texas Tech Sunday afternoon. Rebecca Howell’s goal with 12:58 remaining in the game sent Auburn home with a victory and a loss for the weekend.
Following a 2-1 loss to Missouri on Friday night, the Tigers returned with an intense and physical 90 minutes of play on Sunday.
“We came out with intensity,” said senior Caitlin King. “We had something to prove and wanted to come out with a win for the weekend.”
King, ranked 10th in school history with 43 career points, said they enjoyed playing an unfamiliar opponent and they learn something new each time they play. King came close to scoring with her shot that rebounded off the crossbar during the second half of play.
Goals for Auburn came in the first half from Katy Frierson and Mary Coffed, both unassisted. Maggie Fete scored for Texas Tech off a corner kick with 2:33 remaining in the first half.
Conner Williams tied the game up for Texas Tech with a shot off a rebound in the six yard line during the second half. Howell, with the assist from Coffed, pushed Auburn to victory with the final goal of the game, late in the second half.
With six saves during the game, freshman goalkeeper Amy Howard said, “We played really well, they got two goals but luckily our forwards showed up and scored three good goals for us.”
“Every game we play to win and we’re happy with the way this one turned out,” said Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa.
Auburn hosted Missouri, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt as part of the annual “Auburn Soccer Classic,” where two teams from the Southeastern Conference play each of the teams in the other conference, in this year the Big 12.
In the opening game of the “Classic,” Texas Tech defeated Vanderbilt with a 3-1 win, giving Vanderbilt its first loss of the season. Auburn then fell to Missouri Friday night, with a single goal from Chelsea Yauch and nine saves from Howard.
Sunday morning, Vanderbilt and Missouri ended the game with a 1-1 tie, after 110 minutes of play. Auburn closed out the “Classic” with the victory over Texas Tech later that afternoon.
Auburn will play Duke and top ranked North Carolina this Friday and Sunday in Durham, N.C. Two weeks later Auburn will return home to play Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2.
