Approximately 110 miles away, Atlanta, Ga. is a common road-trip destination for Auburn students this semester.
Fall academic semesters are centered around football games and holidays, but many students take road trips on obligation-free weekends during the spring. One of the most popular places for students to travel is Atlanta. Whether you are a sports fan, art buff or food critic, Atlanta something for everyone to enjoy.
The Georgia Aquarium is the world's largest aquarium experience, with more than eight million gallons of water and the largest collection of aquatic animals. The aquarium houses whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, as well as beluga whales, California sea lions, African penguins, Asian small-clawed otters, American alligators, tropical fish, jellies, sharks, grouper, guitarfish, cownose rays and a hammerhead shark and loggerhead sea turtle.
The aquarium, which opened in November 2005, is listed in the New York Times #1 Bestseller “1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” It was also featured in TripAdvisor.com, Reader’s Digest, Parent’s Magazine, Guinness Book of World Records, Southern Living and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Major League Baseball team Atlanta Braves has been an Atlanta tradition since 1966. The oldest running team in Major League Baseball, Braves have won 16 divisional titles, nine National League pennants, and three World Series championships.
Professional football team, Atlanta Falcons was born in 1965. The team is a member of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League since 1966. The Falcons have been steadily improving and have won one conference championship and three Division Championships. During the 1960s & early 1970s the team produced several top players, such as: Nobis, Claude Humphrey, and George Kunz.
Atlanta also has an American professional basketball team named Atlanta Hawks. In 1946, the franchise was formed when the squad was known as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The team plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The professional ice hockey team, Atlanta Thrashers plays in the National Hockey League. In 1997, the National Hockey League awarded one of three expansion franchises to Atlanta. The nickname “Thrashers” was derived from Georgia's state bird - the Brown Thrasher. The Atlanta Thrashers play all their home games at Philips Arena.
Other popular attractions include Zoo Atlanta, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, a children’s museum, historic tours and an enormous list of all types of restaurants, live music venues and shopping opportunities.
