There are many people that steer clear from organic super markets as well as the organic section in a regular supermarket because they assume that the word “organic” is synonymous with the word “expensive.” This is where they are wrong.
Organics are not always more expensive.
I recently did a price comparison between Auburn’s new organic super market, Earth Fare, to a local grocery store.
The results were very surprising.
I compared 10 different everyday items, ranging from bread to meat as well as sunscreen and toothpaste.
Surprisingly, of the 10 items 2 of them were the same price at both stores. Four of the items were cheaper at the local grocery store and four of the items were cheaper at
Earth Fare.
It is fair to say that the organic supermarket, Earth Fare, and the local grocery store were fairly equal when it comes to price comparison.
Earth Fare is different than the local grocery store because they have promotions and giveaways for you to save money on a daily basis.
Earth Fare has a program that they call “A Pantry Makeover.” In this promotional program customers are asked to bring in the foods in their pantry that do not follow Earth Fares health philosophies in exchange for free foods that do fit their philosophy.
Earth Fare stands by 8 health philosophies: 1.) No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils 2.) No high fructose corn syrup 3.) No artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preserves 4.) No antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones or animal byproducts in their food 5.) No bleach or bromated flour 6.) No irradiate single source spice, produce, or meat 7.) No animal byproducts in their pet foods and 8.) No inhumane treatment of the animals providing them with dairy products, meat, and eggs.
At first glance, one would typically guess that organic foods should cost less to produce than regular foods because everything is done by hand.
This is not the case.
The explanation is a lot more complex than that. The reason why intensively farmed, or regular products, are cheaper is because through taxes we help support the regular farmers. Regular farmers are subsidized by the government where as organic farmers are not.
The regular products would be just as expensive as organic products if the government did not help them out.
All in all, sometimes organic foods may be a tad bit more expensive than regular foods but lets face it, If we do not change our regular eating habits it is not our bank accounts that are going to be hurt, it is our health.
Is it really worth jeopardizing your health or the health of your children just so save a few cents here and there?
