The American Red Cross of Lee County serves as the area’s source for disaster relief, aids in Armed Forces emergency services, and promotes health and safety to the community through blood drives and classes. The development officer, Beth Witten, is responsible for promoting the Red Cross’ services to the community.
“I’m in charge of fundraising and special events, and just making sure that the community is aware of all of our services,” Witten said.
Witten’s main responsibility at the moment is planning the Red Cross’ sixth annual Fly-In. The Fly-In takes place on the second Saturday of March. The Fly-In is a fundraising event for the Red Cross. It also allows those who attend to learn about the aircrafts and honor the military. This year, the Fly-In will be on March 13-14 at the Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport.
“We are excited about this year because we are adding a new component to that event,” Witten said. “So, we are putting all of our efforts into our Fly-In, which is March 13 and 14.”
Witten has been working for the Red Cross for six years. She has been employed for the past four years and acted as a volunteer for two year before she was hired.
Throughout her years at the Red Cross, she has met people who have impacted her life through their experiences. Her connection with those the Red Cross serves and trying to give each person the best care possible has influenced Witten greatly.
“Each client that we deal with has had a crisis at some point in their life, and we are just wanting to make sure that they can get back up on their feet,” Witten said. “So that connection that we make with individuals is really important to us.”
