Spring Break is usually a time for college students to run wild down at the beaches of Panama City Beach, Fla. and Cancun, Mexico. These kids party all day and all night, indulging in selfish pleasures that are probably not remembered in the morning.
But for a college ministry at Auburn University, another type of Spring Break peeked its interest. A number of students from the Auburn Christian Student Center opted to venture to the rural mountains of Honduras to lend a helping hand.
They went in conjunction with an organization already set up in Honduras called Mission Lazarus. This organization helps out the people of Honduras in four key areas which are education, agriculture, spiritual and medical. They also encourage large groups to come and help fund and build houses in the areas. This is the main job that awaited the Auburn students in Honduras.
Mission Lazarus also builds churches and encourages spiritual development through bible schools. The students that went from Auburn also helped out with these bible schools, giving short skits in Spanish for the kids who came.
They also have a working medical clinic where people from the region can come to get medical attention. A few of the students who are nursing majors went and had a tour by the doctors to see how it is run.
The education portion of Mission Lazarus is in charge of schools in a certain region. Although education is free in Honduras, the kids must have uniforms and books to attend school. If their families cannot afford these two things then they cannot go. So Mission Lazarus offers a comprehensive education without the extra cost of uniforms and books.
The last division of Mission Lazarus is the agriculture part. The organization helps teach people how to grow food and also supplies food to people who are in need. The Auburn students also helped carry food to needed people while on their mission trip.
The students who went have a passion for helping people and demonstrating their religious beliefs to other people. They had a wonderful time while in Honduras, and all of them would consider going back again.
