With the excitement of January’s National Championship game in Glendale, Ariz. still pumping through the football world, all eyes are on Auburn Tiger football. Several documentaries about the football team have been made in the months since that amazing win against Oregon, but none like the most recent: “The Depth Chart,” part of ESPN’s “Year of the Quarterback” series.
DLP Entertainment, a third party crew hired by ESPN, has been in Auburn for the past month following around our football team. Their main focus has been on Auburn’s three quarterbacks Barrett Trotter, Clint Moseley and Kiehl Frazier.
“The story about their lives is sure to be an entertaining one,” says the Producer for the show, Adam Goldberg. “Our crew has gotten to know the QBs well throughout the past month.”
The documentary gives an inside look into the personal lives of the three quarterbacks and follows them through the grueling work of what is fall camp practices, the race for the starting position, scrimmages and meetings.
“Because Barrett won the starting position, he was our main focus,” says Goldberg. “We went to his house a few times and he showed us his other talents like playing the piano and guitar.”
The show ends with the exciting season opener against Utah State. During the game the crew followed the team through the tiger walk, their pre-game routine, half time and post-game interviews. The Auburn fans and coaches surely weren’t happy with the performance of the team, but a win is a win no matter how you get there. The documentary crew however, was pleased to see a close game.
“I wanted Auburn to win of course, but the excitement of that storybook comeback is great for television,” laughs Goldberg. “What was even better was that Barrett lead an amazing drive there at the end of the game. He’s going to win me a Grammy!”
As most people do, Goldberg and the crew have thoroughly enjoyed their past month at Auburn and they all said they would love to come back and watch a game as a true fan.
“All the people here have been so nice and accommodating to us and all of our needs,” he says. “There are such good people here and I especially loved the fact that the team said a prayer before the game. You don’t see that everywhere. I’ll definitely be back.”
“The Depth Chart” is scheduled to air October 5. The exact time is not yet available.
