Society South Auburn Magazine is a new, local publication circulating in Auburn-Opelika. The founders, Tim Patton and Kevin Manning, wanted to bring a publication to Auburn that had a local magazine feel while also incorporating premier national magazine style.

Patton and Manning are trying to break the mold of a typical magazine publication. Society South is printed on the highest quality paper with the highest quality covers and binding. It is also a larger format magazine (9” x 12”) and is UV coated.

“To even further break the mold, our magazine will be free to the consumer,” Patton says. Their goal? To have a copy of Society South on every home’s coffee table.

Society South is concentrated on four main areas: art, fashion, design and people of influence. They want to focus on not necessarily what is going on in Auburn-Opelika, but rather what is Auburn-Opelika.

Each issue of Society South includes a feature piece on one influential person whose actions have contributed greatly to the community.

The magazine also displays interior design talent by printing full-page photos and detailed articles on southern homes in the Auburn-Opelika area.

Local boutiques also get the opportunity to advertise their clothing on models, from the Auburn area, through professional photo shoots. According to the magazines website,

“We put many hours into each photo shoot and utilize state-of-the-art photography equipment to achieve stunning results,” Patton and Manning say.

Ginny Kramer, a senior here at Auburn in apparel merchandising, is interning with Society South as a fashion associate. She also elaborated on how the magazine likes to highlight the culture and people of the Auburn area.

“We try to express the diversity here at Auburn and the local people, and use this to explain why Auburn is the way it is.”

Part of Ginny’s job is to style the models for photo shoots for the magazine. She is able to pick the models as well as the clothes that come from local boutiques.

“We like to hold these photo shoots at places around Auburn or at homes in Auburn,” Ginny says.

This internship opportunity has introduced Ginny into the world of magazines. It is somewhere she thought, as an apparel merchandise major, she wouldn’t ever venture into.
