Brothers from the port city of Mobile, Ala. cannot stay away from the loveliest village on the plains. King Braswell and his younger brother John are proud Auburn graduates. Including his years in college, King has lived in Auburn for 21 years. As a horticulture major King knew from the beginning of his college career that he had a knack and a passion for agriculture and plant life. Upon graduation in 1990, King immediately went to work at a plant wholesale growing operation located in South Lee County. After three years of work, King opened a nursery called Blooming Colors located at 1192 S. Donahue St. next to Kinnucan's and across from Loco's. Since 1993 Blooming Colors has been a successful wholesale gardening company. The company's services include backyard streams and water feature installation, hardscape, home delivery and setup, landscape, night scape, plant rental, plant winterization, wedding decor, seasonal decor, and holiday trimming.
King will be the first to tell you that a career in horticulture is a life long career, and for 17 years he has not ceased to pursue excellence in his company and services.
After achieving years of success as a wholesale growing company, Blooming Colors has recently expanded. With the help and direction from his brother John, in Jan. of 2009 the Braswells opened a fresh produce market.
"During the growing season, which is from April to Oct., we grow our own vegetables and fruits," said Braswell. "We sell that fresh produce locally at our new market, The Market at Blooming Colors."
Some of the locally sold vegetables and fruits that are grown at Blooming Colors include peppers, squash, zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe, okra, tomatoes, corn, and basil.
In addition to the fresh produce market, John expanded the company even further, and on Nov. 27, 2009, the day after Thanksgiving and the weekend of the Iron Bowl, he opened the Crepe Myrtle Cafe. While the nursery, produce market and cafe are all located on the same premises, the market and the cafe are located in the same building. All of the food products used at the cafe are grown right there at The Market at Blooming Colors. The name, Crepe Myrtle Cafe, is appropriate because every dish that is offered at the cafe is wrapped inside a homemade crepe.
Though Blooming Colors was successful on its own for 16 years, the expansion of the market and the cafe have increased the company's business and public. After nearly two decades, King and John Braswell continue to reside in Auburn and enjoy a life of community, plants and produce.
