Helping others can be the greatest gift of all.

The Lee County Red Cross in Opelika, Ala., has been helping people and responding to emergencies since Oct. 16, 1917. The Lee County Alabama Chapter is one of the many divisions of the American Red Cross throughout the nation.

The American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide special services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to disaster victims. There are over one million trained and dedicated volunteers, young and old, helping save lives.

Leah Craig has been working for the Lee County Red Cross for one month. She is a full-time AmeriCorps volunteer and will be doing her service at the Red Cross for one year.

“I have always been interested in the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps was a way for me to be near my husband,” said Craig.

AmeriCorps is like the Peace Corps, but it is domestic. She is able to stay in the United States instead of going to another country.

“As an AmeriCorps volunteer, I help with the staff and take emergency military calls,” said Craig. “I am also being trained to be a case worker for Project Share, a utility assistance program. This program happens twice a year and it helps the disabled or elderly pay their bills.”

Project Share has been part of the Red Cross for many years, but this is the first time Craig is going to help oversee it.

“The benefit of the Red Cross on Lee County is it is able to help a lot of people who have faced a disaster,” said Craig. “It helps with house or apartment fires, if a tornado strikes the Red Cross sets up shelters and it also promotes disaster education on CPR and first aid.”

The Red Cross is there to help people with their basic needs right after disasters such as fires, tornadoes, hurricanes and floods. The Red Cross also works with sister Red Cross societies around the world to help victims of natural and man-made disasters.

“I have been trained for disaster relief, but haven’t had anything happen yet,” said Craig. “Disasters are horrible and unpredicted and I look forward to helping victims of different disasters.”

Throughout the nation and in Lee County, people have been generous in donating blood for victims of disasters such as the recent hurricanes. For many years, these blood donors have been saving lives.

The Lee County Red Cross is sponsoring a blood drive on Auburn University’s campus next week. The blood drive will be Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Thursday, Nov. 13 at the Student Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thanks to all the volunteers such as Craig and many blood donors, patients needing blood will be given what they need.
