Fall brings students back to the plains, football season back to full swing and Auburn’s downtown back to life. As the weather crisps and “War Eagles” resound, students, alumni and fans flood bars and restaurants near campus to enjoy the infamous Auburn atmosphere. For one downtown restaurant, however, the 2008 season ushers in more than just returning customers.

This season, as Old Auburn Ale House closes in on a decade of operation, a distinctive flavor is being embraced with a huge new menu.

“We have about 14 new items on the menu we rolled out September 6th,” said Sue Chef George Perkins, Old Auburn Ale House manager. “We’ve decided to keep all the old favorites but provide for a more extensive pub selection.”

The new menu incorporates more items true to brewpub style and more acceptable to a college budget.

“We have great home-brewed beer college students really seem to enjoy,” said Chris Terry, Ale House assistant manager. “We just wanted some great foods students would love to pair it with.”

Old Auburn Ale House is located in downtown Auburn with its front doors facing the lower lever of the municipal parking deck. The building is tucked directly behind Cheeburger Cheeburger. The bar opens at 3:00 p.m. to catch those ready for an afternoon brew, while the kitchen becomes available for orders at 5:00 p.m.

“During the week the kitchen stays open till about 9:30,” said Perkins, “and on the weekends, especially during football season, we generally keep serving a little later– till 10:30 or 11:00. After that, the bar stays open and we usually have a live band Thursday through Saturday.”

In addition to the new menu items, Ale House has also recently embraced an $8.95 all-you-can-eat-wings special on Monday nights.

Jimmy Hanson, Auburn University senior and Ale House regular, said, “The wings really are a great deal. They are huge, not like some of the wimpy wings you find a lot around here. There are great flavors to choose from and, I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.”

This unique Auburn pub is embracing changes to better serve the college community, and, so far, it seems to be finding success.

Meredith Bonner, an Ale House waitress said, “people seem to enjoy how broad the new menu is and how much there is to offer. Choices range from jambalaya to fish and chips and even nachos. There’s a little bit of everything. You really can’t go wrong.”
