To help Auburn University students and faculty get into the Halloween spirit, Auburn University’s University Programs Council is hosting an event called Ghost Hunters. “Ghost Hunters is going to be an awesome, fun Halloween event,” says Ashley Sisk, the director of special programs for UPC.
Darren Thompson, a professional ghost hunter, will conduct a ghost hunt on Auburn’s campus. Thompson is the president and director of technology for the Washington State Paranormal Investigations and Research.
The tour will begin in the ballroom in the new student center. There, Thompson will begin with an hour-long presentation of his past ghost hunts and past paranormal experiences. He will then break the group down into two smaller groups. One group at a time, Thompson will lead a ghost hunt of the historic Auburn University Chapel.
The Auburn University Chapel is the oldest building still standing in its original location at Auburn University. The chapel is located at the intersection of College Street and Thatch Avenue. It was built in 1851 as a Presbyterian church. However, during the Civil War the building served as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers.
The building was sold to the university in 1921, and today it serves as a nondenominational church and a multipurpose building.
The idea for Ghost Hunt came from the University of Alabama. “Alabama does a ghost hunt every year with their students, and it’s ended up being a huge hit on their campus,” Sisk says. “We always are looking at different schools and at what they do, so we’re hoping it will be a big hit on our [campus] too.”
Sisk is predicting about 150 to 200 people to attend the event. UPC is also hosting Halloween carnival the same night. This event will start at 4:30 and is open for the community of Auburn. The event will provide a safe place for local kids to come out and celebrate the Halloween holiday.
As the director of special projects for UPC, Sisk helps organize various smaller and more diverse events that are not typically offered on Auburn’s campus. In the past these events have included cooking workshops, dancing workshops and smaller university concerts.
Ghost Hunt will begin at 7 p.m. in the ballroom in the new student center on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2008. For further information contact Ashley Sisk at the UPC office or visit their website at www.auburn.edu/upc.
