If one word could describe the United States it would be diverse. The United States is home to people from many different cultures, religious backgrounds, political backgrounds and all walks of life. Because the United States is so diverse, it is becoming more important everyday that people are open- minded to diversity and embrace all people. It is essential that universities enhance their study on diversity.
Auburn University is one university that has taken this to heart. It will be hosting a conference titled, “Understanding Differences that Matter: Diversity Research at Auburn University. Oct. 29-30, 2008. This conference is sponsored by the Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity. It will be held at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center. At the event Distinguished Diversity Researcher Awards will be given out, there will be featured speakers, a step show and an art.
Auburn University is moving forward and taking part in diversity research. Historically Auburn University has not talked a lot about diversity. However, within the past seven years much attention has been given to this area of research. An Africana minor is one example of how Auburn University is being proactive. The conference that is being held also shows that the diversity is not only a topic that is being brought up in class. It shows that action is being taken.
In an interview with David Carter, an associate professor of History, he states why doing research is important around universities. “Doing research on diversity shows students that it’s important,” says Carter. He goes on to say that the university should take strides to mirror its priorities to what it learns through the research. Research is useless if it is not applied to the betterment of the community, country and world. Auburn University has been good at studying diversity, but is not diverse in what it looks like. However, improvements are being made. For example, the History department is now on even playing field for men and women. The next challenge is to make it as diverse on the ethnic and racial levels.
When asked about what he would stress to students in order to help them consider the importance of diversity on campus, in the workplace and in life, Carter said he would stress that diversity is more than just about political correctness. He went on to say that we live in a very diverse world and even though Auburn University can be a bubble, student will encounter much diversity throughout life. Being open-minded will benefit oneself greatly. Moreover, it is not just about being told the right thing to do, but about keeping an open mind.
Auburn University is taking the next step in promoting diversity and enhancing diversity research through hosting the conference. More information on diversity research at Auburn University can be found at www.auburn.edu/researchdiversity .
