The Auburn community is becoming more eco-friendly by incorporating more bike paths in the community and on the Auburn University campus. On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 the ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for the newest bike path for the Auburn community.
The bike path is the newest addition to Auburn's cycling community. The path runs along side South Donahue drive from College Street all the way into campus. Emma Mulvany, with Auburn University's sustainability Department, said she has seen an increased amount bike commuters on the path recently. Mulvany bike commutes to work on a daily basis. She said she enjoys riding on the path in the early morning along the experimental farming grounds.
She is excited about what the new path means for the Auburn community and Auburn University. She said the path is helping Auburn University become more of a pedestrian and biker friendly campus. Mulvany said it also helps the community become better integrated with Auburn University in support of a healthier community.
Mulvany said bike commuting to work or school is a great way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine without having to change your whole routine around working out. This way, she said, you are getting your exercise while on your way to and from class or work.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will have many different attractions for the Auburn community to get involved with. Aubie will be there to promote the event and to greet the bike riders. Bikers cam participate in a number of different bike rides for the event. The Chris Hines memorial ride is also participating with this event. The Chris Hines memorial ride is an annual ride that has coordinated with the opening of the bike path to offer more riders to the event. The Chris Hines memorial ride is paid participation, with two different rides the bikers can take. Those rides, however, Mulvany said is for the more experienced bike rider.
Auburn University is also having a few bike rides of their own to celebrate the opening of the bike path. anyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the refreshments, take a ride or get their pictures taken with Aubie.
The festivities and ribbon cutting will take place near the solar energy house on South Donahue Drive at 8:30 a.m. Saturday Oct. 25.
