The Loveliest Village

This past Sunday one of Auburn University's sororities, Chi Omega, held their fall philanthropy event, Walk for a Wish. In this philanthropy event the sorority sponsors the Make a Wish Foundation.

Every fall Chi Omega holds the Walk for a Wish campaign. Now, you may think why is it called Walk for a Wish? The Auburn Chapter of Chi Omega sponsors a one mile walk around Town Creek park where all proceeds go toward the Make a Wish Foundation. At the event there is live music, free food and participants receive a free t-shirt from the event. Rachel Maynard, a Chi Omega sorority member, said, "It's a great time with free food, live music and good times." She also added that the free t-shirt with participation is also a reason some people think about signing up for the walk.

Maynard said that at last years walk the sorority raised enough money to grant six wishes within the Make a Wish Foundation. She said their goal this year was to grant 10 wishes, and she believe they may have reached that goal by raising $60,000 dollars. When with last year's walk they only raised $45,000 dollars.

Something really unique about the Chi Omega philanthropy even is that this philanthropy is not confined to just Auburn University's chapter of Chi Omega. The philanthropy for the Make a Wish Foundation is actually a national philanthropy, which means, that all the chapters of Chi Omega from across the country at various schools support the Make a Wish Foundation. Many sororities have localized or specialized to a specific chapter philanthropy events.

However, no matter what school you attend, if you are a Chi Omega then your chapter will support the Make a Wish Foundation. Each chapter will give all the proceeds that they raise to their local Make a Wish Foundation. Maynard said she thought it was a really cool idea. She said her sister goes to school in Tennessee and is also a member of Chi Omega at her school. Maynard like that it got her whole family involved in supporting the Make a Wish Foundation. She likes knowing that all of her Chi Omega sisters were all connected by the same type of philanthropy event.

During the spring semester, the different chapters of the sorority across the nation have different philanthropy events. The Auburn University chapter of Chi Omega teams with another Auburn University Fraternity to give back to the Auburn-Opelika community. The spring philanthropy is called Camp Chi O. During this philanthropy event the sorority doesn't actually raise money, but they rather spend the day having and showing underprivileged children a good time. They team up with Auburn University's Project Uplift, which pairs students with underprivileged children, kind of like a university sponsored big brother/ big sister program

Maynard said it is just a fun filled day were everyone just gets to play. She said she loves being able to play and just have fun with the children of the community.
