Despite their popular role in movies and TV shows, sororities and fraternities go beyond the typical partying and gossiping stereotype. Every year, all across Auburn’s campus, Greek organizations take part in philanthropic events that give back to the community.
Delta Zeta is one organization that is truly devoted to this. It is stated in their creed, “To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, may I give graciously of what is mine.” DZ’s recognize that philanthropy is a gift of generosity in which you give to others through service.
Nationally, the sisters of Delta Zeta support the speech and hearing impaired. This includes supporting organizations such as the Sound Beginnings Program, the Painted Turtle Camp for children, the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Gallaudet University.
Along with these national organizations, each individual chapter supports various local organizations as well. The Beta Xi chapter, here at Auburn, supports that Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind and the Lee County Humane Society.
“We decided that we wanted to incorporate our love for animals with our philanthropy,” explains Kate Woods, the president of Auburn’s Delta Zeta chapter.
This year the sisters of Delta Zeta are hosting a philanthropy project is called DZ Day at the Park. It is a slight variation of their previous philanthropy event called DZ Doggy DayZ.
DZ Day at the Park is basically going to be a day of relaxation and fun for both the community members and their pets. It will consist of a dog walk around a designated trail. Participants will receive doggy treat bags including dog bones, leashes, bandanas and chew toys.
Dogs can compete in competitions including best trick and best costume. Last year dogs came out dressed as dragons and ballerinas, and tricks included chasing tennis balls and following interesting owner commands.
There will also be an Ultimate Frisbee tournament where fraternity and sorority members can form teams and sign up to be a part of the tournament bracket. Local children are also welcome to participate.
Refreshments will be provided for those who come out. Live entertainment will also be provided by the Michael Warren Band, a group hailing from Birmingham, Ala. His set includes self-written songs like “You” and “Love has found a way.”
The Lee County Humane Society will also be present. They will have a table set up and will be offering pet safety information and adoption information. They will be bringing a few animals from the shelter to come out and play. They will also have an adoption tent set up with animals ready to be brought home that day.
The Iams Company will also have a table. The popular dog and cat food company out of Dayton, Ohio will supply the treats for the doggy bags. There will also be a representative handing out nutrition information.
Delta Zeta is expecting close to 300 participants to come out and enjoy the day with them. You can register for the Frisbee tournament with any Delta Zeta sister. DZ Day at the Park will be held Sunday Nov. 9, 2008 at Kiesel Park in Auburn. The festivities will begin at 2 p.m. and end around 5.
